Threads of Life: Sustaining the Textile Arts of Indonesia
Sponsoring the weaving of natural-dyed, handmade, ritual textiles from endangered traditions. Working directly with weavers, making advanced payments for pieces that take years to complete. Facilitating the continued appreciation of traditional wisdom within its community of origin while sharing this knowledge with the world.
Bali & Flores, Indonesia
Worked with Michel Garcia and the dyers at the Threads of Life studio in Bali to develop recipes for Western artists to use Symplocos as a 100% plant mordant with natural dyes. Traveled to the community of Mbo Bhenga on the island of Flores, where the Symplocos leaves are collected from the surrounding forest.
Participated in the filming of Colors of the Americas: Natural Dye Workshop with Michel Garcia. Produced by Yoshiko Wada/Slow Fiber Studios. Filmed on location at El Centro de las Artes de San Augustin Etla.
ISEND Conference (International Symposium and Exhibition on Natural Dyes)
Nepal & India
Traveling as members of the Goodweave Board of Directors, Mary Zicafoose and Sara traveled to Nepal and India to visit the Goodweave carpet factories, as well as the schools and social programs for the rescued children.
